From Rough Patch to Confidence: Kai’s Boxing Journey in Mildura

When Kai first walked into The Boxing Cartel Mildura, boxing wasn’t something he’d ever pictured himself doing. In fact, he’d never really stuck with any sports before. But during a rough patch in life, his mum suggested giving boxing a go — and that decision changed everything.
“I wanted to try something that would push me out of my comfort zone,” Kai says. “I had no idea if I’d enjoy it, but two years later, I don’t regret it one bit.”

Starting Out as a Beginner

Like many people stepping into a boxing gym for the first time, Kai admits it was nerve-racking. “Walking in and seeing all these people who had been doing it for years was intimidating. I was worried I’d embarrass myself.”
But the atmosphere at The Boxing Cartel was different. With a strong family-like culture built by coach Nick, newcomers quickly feel at home. “Nick has created an environment where everyone gets along,” Kai explains. “I’ve made so many friends here in such a short time, and that’s massively boosted my confidence.”

Staying Consistent
For Kai, consistency came down to one big factor: the coach. “Nick made it clear that if I put in the effort, he’d match it with his coaching. He’s lifted me up so much in the past that I try to put in 100% every day. I want him to see how invested I am.”
That accountability — knowing the coach is watching your effort — kept Kai coming back, week after week.

Breakthrough Moments

One of the biggest breakthroughs was sparring for the first time. “It’s one thing to hit the bag,” Kai says, “but stepping into the ring is completely different. You realise not every punch or trick is going to land, and you have to think on your feet.”
That challenge of adapting under pressure helped Kai grow not just as a boxer, but as a person.

Confidence and Growth

Looking back, Kai says his confidence has skyrocketed. “I never thought I’d be punching other people as a hobby, and actually enjoying it! But here I am.”

Boxing has improved both his mental health and physical fitness. “It’s brought me out of the shell I was stuck in for so long. Now I feel stronger, fitter, and more motivated to train harder every session.”

Advice for Others

For anyone who thinks they’re “not the boxing type,” Kai has one piece of advice: “Don’t knock it till you’ve tried it. I didn’t think I’d enjoy boxing either, and now it’s one of my favourite things to do.”

Kai’s journey is proof that boxing in Mildura isn’t just for fighters — it’s for anyone who wants to build confidence, improve fitness, and find a supportive community.
